CIBER is a public consortium of Spanish universities, hospitals and technology centers, created under the direction of the Health Institute Carlos III of Ministry, and involves more than 5,000 Spanish researchers in biomedicine. It is a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional translational research center that integrates basic, clinical and technological research.
Its center of Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN) has 47 research groups selected on basis on their scientific excellence. The CIBER-BBN Research Program is organized into three scientific areas and six strategic lines. Bioengineering consists of the strategic lines of Multimodal Diagnosis and Intelligent Devices, Biomaterials of Regenerative Medicine and Implants, and Nanomedicine includes Therapeutic Nanoconjugates and Biosensors.
CIBER-BBN has a research infrastructure that has been recognized as a Unique Scientific-Technological Infrastructure (ICTS) (http://www.nanbiosis.es). It comprises 27 complementary units, which are distributed in 14 institutions and grouped into 5 platforms:
- Production of biomolecules
- Production of Biomaterials and Nanomaterials
- Characterization of fabrics, biomaterials and surfaces
- Bioimaging
- High Performance Computing
